abstract
abstract in written mode of language, metadiscourse markers are used commonly to help writers in general and academic writers in particular to produce coherent and professional texts. the purpose of the present study was to compare introduction sections of applied linguistics and physics articles regarding their use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers based on the model proposed by hyland (2005). in order to carry out this study, 50 articles from each of the disciplines were selected whose writers were native farsi speakers. both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data analysis were employed in the present study. it was found that applied linguistics used significantly more stances of metadiscourse markers in general and interactive metadiscourse in particular. in the case of interactive metadiscourse subcategories, applied linguistics articles used more code glosses, physics articles employed more evidentials and they were approximately the same in using frame markers. neither of the disciplines differed significantly from one another in the case of interactional metadiscourse. no significant difference was found for interactional metadiscourse in general, but it was found that applied linguistics articles used significantly more boosters compared to the physics articles, physics articles employed more hedges and both of the groups were approximately the same in using self-mentions. the findings of the present study are useful to syllabus designers in emphasizing the critical importance of allocating some sections to metadiscourse markers in their textbooks.

A Comparative Study of Introduction and Discussion sections of Sub-disciplines of Applied Linguistics Research Articles
Much has been written in the past few decades about the reasons why many research articles (RAs) do not find their ways into well-established academic journals. While some doubt viable comparison between "big" English-language journals (to use Swales' 2004 words) or international journals (IJs) and "small" ones published in other local languages, there is still a good many reasons to hope for t...
full textNominalization in Academic Writing: A Cross-disciplinary Investigation of Physics and Applied Linguistics Empirical Research Articles
The present study aimed to explore how nominalization is manifested in a sample of Physics and Applied Linguistics research articles (RAs), representing hard and soft sciences respectively. To this end, 60 RAs from discipline-related professional journals were randomly selected and analyzed in light of Halliday and Matthiessen’s (1999) taxonomy of nominalization. Comparing the normalized freque...
full textMetadiscourse in Applied Linguistics and Chemistry Research Article Introductions
This study examined disciplinary rhetoric in research articles, focusing on different traditions in structuring text discourses from a metadiscourse-move analytic approach. The corpus consisted of 72 research article Introductions (RAIs): 36 in applied linguistics and 36 in chemistry. Swales’ CARS model (1990, 2004) and Hyland’s interpersonal model of metadiscourse (2005) were used as analytica...
full textThe Use of Hedging in Discussion Sections of Applied Linguistics Research Articles with Varied Research Methods
The discourse of the discussion in research articles is regarded to be of considerable significance—as in this section the findings are interpreted in light of previous research and the authors’ argumentations are put forward as a major contribution (see Hyland, 1999). For this reason, the content and structure of the discussion section have been explored in several studies; however, little att...
